Nagorno-Karabakh president announces his resignation, replaces state minister
YEREVAN, August 31. /ARKA/. Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) President Arayik Harutyunyan said today he will resign on Friday.
"Tomorrow I will tender my resignation to the people and the National Assembly of Artsakh. I made this final decision two days ago, taking into account my interaction with all internal and external players and the public at large in recent weeks," Harutyunyan said in a statement on his Facebook page.
He noted that during the 44-day war in 2020, he directed all his potential to strengthening the stability in Artsakh, preventing the rise in crimes, ensuring the return of Artsakh citizens, preserving the country's constitutional order and the foundations of statehood.
"Yes, we did not succeed in some issues, but, in general, in the shortest possible time we not only straightened the country's hunched back, but also brought stability," he said.
Harutyunyan said that Artsakh has been under Azerbaijani blockade for almost nine months, and the people of Artsakh, who have been taken hostage, are subjected to open genocide. He pointed out that during this period all possible measures have been taken to present the situation to the world and get the support of the international community.
"Today's unstable geopolitical situation in the world, regional developments and the developments expected in and around Artsakh directly speak about the need to change approaches and steps, to show flexibility. To achieve the above, it is necessary to change the main actors in Artsakh, starting with me," Harutyunyan said.
Arayik Harutyunyan was elected as president of Artsakh on April 14, 2020. Prior to that, he served as prime minister.
Arayik Harutyunyan said also he signed a decree on Thursday dismissing Gurgen Nersisyan as state minister and replacing him with Secretary of the Security Council Samvel Shahramanyan, "who was given broad powers."
"Choosing Samvel Shahramanyan, I took into account his flexibility, experience in various responsible positions and accumulated knowledge, which directly relate to both national security and state administration," Harutyunyan said. -0-
