YEREVAN, October 8. /ARKA/. Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Foreign Minister Masis Mayilyan announced his decision to run for the presidential election, saying his earlier Facebook post on August 13, 2019, in which he said he was considering the possibility of participating in the presidential  election in  2020,  received a wide positive response in Artsakh, Armenia and the Diaspora.

Mayilyan said discussions held with Artsakh citizens, political and public circles, and some prominent Diaspora figures showed that there are prerequisites for running for the upcoming presidential elections.

"Since the current prerequisites guarantee the successful holding of the election in 2020 and inspire confidence in the effective implementation of various development programs in Artsakh, I decided to nominate myself for the post," he said in a new Facebook post.

He also said that the time has come for active and decisive steps aimed at wide unification of the healthy forces of society for discussion and approval of the national agenda, as well as programs of fundamental reforms in Artsakh.

“As a result of the reforms, we will jointly ensure a safe, prosperous, reliable, fair, civilized and democratic future for our country. In a word, we will build our new Artsakh,” Mayilyan emphasized.

Other potential candidates, who announced their intention to run for the post are the head of the Free Homeland Party Araik Harutyunyan and ex-Minister of Defense Samvel Babayan. The current president of Artsakh, Bako Sahakyan, said in June last year that he would not participate in these elections.-0-
