Authorities' agenda on constitutional reforms is false: opposition MP
YEREVAN, February 9. /ARKA/. The opposition Pativ Unem alliance in the Armenian parliament is strongly opposed to constitutional reforms, proposed by the authorities, the head of the alliance’s faction Hayk Mamijanyan said on Friday.
According to Mamijanyan, the agenda of constitutional reforms is false. The MP does not believe that the authorities will manage to bring it to its logical end.
"We will react to the process as it develops and discuss forming a front to oppose the plan. The most important issue on our agenda, however, is that the Armenian negotiator is busy exclusively fulfilling Azerbaijan's ultimatums. And the most recent proof of this is Pashinyan's intention to go for direct negotiations, which is suicide for us," Mamijanyan said at a press briefing in the parliament.
The parliamentarian is convinced that the only salvation for Armenia is a change of power.
On January 19, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia needs a new Constitution that will make the country more competitive and viable in the new geopolitical conditions.
On January 24, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan confirmed that Azerbaijan sees problems in Armenia's Declaration of Independence.
On February 1, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that peace between the two countries can be achieved if Armenia puts an end to its territorial claims against Azerbaijan and amends the Constitution and other legal documents.
According to him, Armenia's Declaration of Independence contains direct calls for the unification of Karabakh with Armenia and violation of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, and references to this document are also reflected in the Armenian Constitution. -0-
