YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. In a statement issued today Armenian President Armen Sarkissian says the country and the society are all in a deep post-war crisis.
'This must be stated without formalities, without self-deception, and at the same time without despair. We must fully understand and accept this crisis and do our best to overcome it. Together, hand in hand,' he said.
'Regardless of the position held, political convictions and views, personal likes and dislikes, we must think about the future of our state, country and people. Each of us has the right to express their opinion, dissatisfaction and demand from the authorities an explanation of the enormous human and territorial losses inflicted on us by the war.
The government cannot act in the spirit of the public sentiment of 2018. The reality today is completely different. In these tense and difficult days, I appeal to all of you: your every action must be in accordance with the law.
I also appeal to representatives of law enforcement agencies: it is important that law and order are observed. At the same time, remember that in front of you, on the streets of Yerevan, are our compatriots, one of us, be it a woman, a man, a young or an elderly person. Among them there are people who defended our homeland a few days ago.
Any violence, disproportionate use of force and means is unacceptable. In your actions, you must show responsibility, high human and professional qualities.
We need turnaround solutions today. Decisions must be within the framework of national consensus. We must be able to restore the atmosphere of tolerance, mutual respect, unite all the positive and vital qualities of our people, and transform them into a collective force that will be the key to our continued success. This is exactly what the activities of the President of Armenia and the institution of the presidency are aimed at. God bless us all. "
The opposition parties are holding a protest rally today in downtown Yerevan to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The key speaker is a former prime minister Vazgen Manukyan, nominated by the opposition as their single candidate for the post of transitional prime minister.
If elected prime minister, Manukyan will stop his party activities, and after a while he will be obliged to hold early parliamentary elections, in which he will not take part and will not support any political party. -0-
