Armenian president meets with Pope Francis in Vatican
YEREVAN, October 11. /ARKA/. The official visit of Armenian President Armen Sarkissian to the Holy See started on Monday morning with a private conversation with Pope Francis, the press service of the Armenian president said.
The President of Armenia thanked His Holiness for the constructive high-level dialogue between the Holy See and Armenia.
According to Sarkissian, 2021 is a special year for the relations between Armenia and the Vatican, taking into account the 20th and 5th anniversaries of the visits by John Paul II and His Holiness to Armenia respectively.
“These historic visits will forever remain bright in the hearts and minds of the Armenian people,” he said, stressing the principled position of Pope Francis on the Armenian Genocide.
The President noted with gratitude that at this stage of difficult challenges, the Vatican extended a hand of solidarity to Armenia and its people. The best evidence of this is the messages of Pope Francis for peace during the war unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and after it, as well as the call for the release of Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan.
Sarkissian noted that the Artsakh problem is a human rights issue, the demand of the Armenian people to live, create and realize their inalienable right to self-determination on their ancient Christian land. -0-
