YEREVAN, November 24. /ARKA/. Karen Karapetyan, Armenian prime minister, applied Thursday for joining the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, Novosti-Armenia reports.
“I think this step was predictable and logical to many, but I want to explain my decision,” he said before today’s regular Cabinet meeting.
“First, I have been invited to the prime-ministerial position by Serzh Sargsyan, the Armenian president and the head of the Republican Part of Armenia,” he is quoted by the news agency.
Besides, in his words, any government should have a political base and the current Cabinet, first of all, is the government of the Republican Party of Armenia.
Third - even if the first two circumstances are left out, many may ask why we don’t establish another party to lean on, but ‘I think this would be wrong to do so’.
“Having Karabakh problem and threats to our security, we should avoid any destabilizing process,” Karapetyan said.
As another reason, he pointed out his opinion that only an RPA-like party can be a political support for implementing reforms, since the party’s conservative ideology is aligned for him and there are many acceptable persons in the party.
The authorities’ task is to change the country’s economic and social things and state administration, he said, and it means they should start with themselves.
In his words, ‘open and sincere’ discussions are going on in the party and self-criticism is frequently voiced louder than it can be assumed outside.
Karapetyan declared that, taking up the office, he became a participant of the reformation process and assumed his part of responsibilities.
He said that in the new situation, many of his friends and associates want to join the process attaching it a new spirit.
“Is it necessary for nonpartisan members of the government and my team-mates to join the party? There is no any compulsion – it is their personal willing and ideological decision.”
The premier also said that the Republican Party of Armenia, just like other parties, not always had been effective because of some objective and subjective reasons, but, in his opinion, Armenian Republicans understand its responsibility for the country’s development and security and is able to change things.
“Taking this into account, I decided to join the RPA,” he said. -0---
