Armenia's Ministry of Health has warned of possible outbreaks of infectious diseases and epidemics due to the ongoing fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
YEREVAN, October 18. /ARKA/. Armenia's Ministry of Health has warned of possible outbreaks of infectious diseases and epidemics due to the ongoing fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
“Due to damaged water supply and sewerage systems, an unfavorable sanitary and hygienic situation is developing making impossible to carry out proper cleaning and disinfection. This is creating favorable conditions for the emergence and spread of intestinal infectious diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, dysentery, etc.,” the ministry said in a statement.
It said the military zone passes through the territories of natural foci of plague, where there are both pathogens and carriers.
It said the refusal of Azerbaijan to swap the bodies of those killed in the clashes contribute to the emergence of a favorable environment for the feeding and reproduction of insects and wild animals that transmit infectious diseases or are natural carriers.
'Infectious, including especially dangerous pathogens can remain viable in the environment for a long time, which creates all the prerequisites for the emergence of outbreaks and epidemics,” the ministry said.
It said the military actions can contribute to the activation of foci and increase the risks of the spread of infectious diseases transmitted also by rodents. This risk exists not only for the parties to the conflict, but for the rest of the region, in particular Iran.
"All responsibility for outbreaks, epidemics during hostilities and in the post-war period is borne by the Azerbaijani side, since it has continued to constantly violate the humanitarian truce signed with the aim of exchanging the bodies," the ministry said.
The latest truce, which was announced Saturday and took force at midnight, was the second attempt to establish a cease-fire since the Azerbaijani aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh on September 27. Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said that the enemy launched an attack in the southern direction of the conflict zone in the early hours of the morning today and there were “casualties and wounded on both sides.
According to Armenian military sources, some 6,109 Azerbaijani soldiers have been killed since September 27 and thousands have been wounded. Armenian forces have also destroyed 554 tanks and armored vehicles, 4 MLRS Smerch, Uragan, TOS-1A, 186 UAVs, 16 helicopters, 22 aircraft.
According to the official data of the Armenian side, during the repulsion of the enemy's aggression, more than 670 Armenian servicemen have been killed, several hundred people have been wounded. As a result of war crimes, over 36 civilians have been killed in Nagorno-Karabakh and over 115 wounded. -0-
