Armenia develops peacekeeping operations in step with its own defense potential

Being in an unstable and unpredictable environment for more than two decades, when the concepts of "war and peace" are very shaky, Armenia nonetheless has been developing national capabilities for international peacekeeping operations in step with the consistent development of its defense capabilities, Armenia’s Defense Minister David Tonoyan said at the Moscow Conference on International Security.
YEREVAN, April 26. /ARKA/. Being in an unstable and unpredictable environment for more than two decades, when the concepts of "war and peace" are very shaky, Armenia nonetheless has been developing national capabilities for international peacekeeping operations in step with the consistent development of its defense capabilities, Armenia’s Defense Minister David Tonoyan said at the Moscow Conference on International Security.
"Armenia, as a country that has learned the value of international security and stability from its own practice, has accumulated considerable experience in peacekeeping operations over the past 15 years in Kosovo and Iraq. Currently, Armenian peacekeeping troops are involved in four international peacekeeping missions," he said, according to Armenian Ministry of Defense.
According to him, Armenia has also demonstrated a consistent commitment to helping to ensure positive changes in the regions affected by the full-scale crisis. He said Armenian sent a humanitarian mission to Syria at the official request of the Syrian government, and the request of the Armenian community of Aleppo and its religious leaders with the assistance of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Expressing gratitude to the Russian government for support, Tonoyan noted that the deployment of the Armenian humanitarian contingent in this region is justified by the historical presence of Armenians in the Middle East from time immemorial and the desire to preserve its roots taking into account the bitter experience of the past ten years of instability, resulting in massive exodus of Armenians from Iraq.
“Armenia intends to continue to make its feasible contribution to the UN-sanctioned peacekeeping operations of various formats. For this we are ready to use all of our potential, and above all, the field hospital and sappers to eliminate makeshift explosive devices,” said Tonoyan. -0-
