YEREVAN, July 1, /ARKA/. The acting head of Armenia’s Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) Gagik Jahangiryan has resigned today due to health problems, Lilit Shaboyan, press secretary of the Supreme Judicial Council, announced in a Facebook post.

The Supreme Judicial Council is a state body that oversees Armenia’s courts. Jahangiryan’s resignation comes after a scandal that involved also his predecessor Ruben Vartazaryan.

On June 20, Ruben Vardazaryan, the former Chairman of the SJC, published an audio recording of his conversation with Jahangiryan, which he secretly recorded in February, 2021.

In the recording Jahangiryan is heard telling Vardazaryan to resign or face criminal charges

After the publication of the scandalous audio recording, representatives of the opposition and civil society demanded that Jahangiryan resign. -0-
