YEREVAN, March 25. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia ratified the Framework Agreement on the Establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) at its session on Wednesday.

According to RA Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan, the agreement, which was signed by Armenia in 2025, stimulates international cooperation in the conservation of large cats and will prevent their population decline.

The minister noted that the Caucasian leopard (Panthera pardus ciscaucasica) occupies a unique place in Armenia's rich biodiversity.

"Its conservation is not simply the preservation of one animal species, but also the maintenance of ecosystem balance and habitat stability," Matevosyan said.

He also reported that other large cat species, such as the lynx, the European wildcat (Felis silvestris Schreber), and the Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul), are found in the Republic of Armenia, adding that the latter two species are listed in the Red Book of Endangered Species of the Republic of Armenia.

Matevosyan also stated that joining the agreement will enable the development of international cooperation, joint research, and the application of advanced methods in biodiversity conservation.
