YEREVAN, January 18. / ARKA/. On Saturday, January 18, at 05.28, Armenia’s Seismological Service, recorded an earthquake of 3.6 magnitude 10 km southeast of the town of Ashotsk in the northwestern region of Shirak. It said the epicenter was at the depth of 10 km, where its force was on 4-5 points on the Richter scale.
The earthquake was followed by a series of 24 aftershocks with a maximum magnitude of 2.4. The earthquake occurred in the seismically active zone of Javakhk, which is characterized by a large number of weak seismic shocks.
“The earthquake that occurred on January 18 and the aftershocks that followed it are not unusual for the Javakhk zone and cannot be a reason of cause panic,” the Seismological Service said..
It said the regional seismic protection service of the Ministry of Emergencies carries out round-the-clock duty and monitors the seismic situation, periodically assessing the current seismic threat in Armenia and Artsakh.
“Weakening aftershocks indicate that the seismic activity is declining,” it said.
The earthquake was felt in the town of Spitak, the villages of Artagyuh and Shirakamut of the Lori region, as well as in the town of Gyumri and the villages of Jajur and Ashotsk of the Shirak region.-0-
