YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. Armenia’s railway freight activity in 2012 January grew by 22.1% from a year earlier to 210,300 tons, the South Caucasus Railways, a Russian-run company operating Armenia’s railroads, said in a press release. It said the figure represented an almost 20% rise form the projected volume.
The volume of exported goods grew by 35.1% from 2011 January to 19,400 tons and the volume of imported goods increased by 22.3% to 88,200 tons. The volume of cargo transported within Armenia rose by 13.2% to 92,700 tons. According to the press release, the average weight of a freight train grew to 1,440 tons from 1,315 tons in 2011 January.
‘The railway is gradually building up key performance indicators, including the volume of cargo. These results are largely due to flexible tariff policy aimed at reducing transport costs,’ it said.
South Caucasus Railways is a 100% subsidiary of state-run Russian Railways that was awarded a concesional management of SCR. The 30 year contract was signed in 2008. It can be prolonged for another 10 years. –0--
