YEREVAN, January 22. /ARKA/. "Syunik" Airport in Kapan may become another international airport in Armenia, RA Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan announced at a government meeting on Thursday.
This opportunity arose following the government's approval of the fifth amendment to the concession agreement for the management of Zvartnots International Airport, signed with the Argentine company "Corporación América S.A".
According to RA Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Armen Simonyan, the current concession agreement for Zvartnots Airport contains certain restrictions regarding Kapan Airport.
He explained that this refers to a provision stating that if the Armenian government decides to convert any airport within a 250-kilometer radius of Zvartnots Airport into a civilian airport—either domestic or international—the current concessionaire has the preemptive right to assume its management.
"However, as a result of the fifth amendment (approved today), Syunik Airport in Kapan is exempted from this regulation," Simonyan noted.
According to him, legally, it is possible to grant Kapan Airport international status, but this requires making the necessary investments and installing equipment to support border, customs, and other essential services.
According to the government decision, the fifth amendment to the concession agreement with Corporación América is scheduled to be signed within one month. The concessionary management term for Zvartnots Airport is extended until the end of 2067, with the concessionaire committing to invest up to $425 million by 2033.
