YEREVAN, December 2. /ARKA/. Keeping Armenian airlines on the EU's "blacklist" for aviation safety is a purely technical, not a political, matter, assures EU High Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
At a briefing for Armenian journalists in Brussels, the European Commissioner noted that this issue falls under the purview of the EU Aviation Safety Committee.
"The Committee assesses that Armenia needs to take certain steps, and we are in contact with the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia. Since not everything necessary has been done, a decision has not yet been made," Armenpress quotes her as saying.
She noted that the EU wants to "make sure that everything is in order from a safety perspective," and has therefore offered Armenia special assistance through the Twinning process, which will then be financed. "This is a special tool through which experts from EU member states with experience in this field will assist your government in this matter," Kos stated.
Since 2020, all air carriers certified in Armenia have been included on the EU Air Safety List due to insufficient aviation safety controls. This means they are banned from operating scheduled flights to EU countries (with the exception of evacuation, humanitarian, and medical flights).
Over the past few years, significant progress has been made in rectifying the situation: 41 issues that led to their inclusion on the list have been identified, 40 of which have been resolved as of November 2024. In January 2024, the Armenian Aviation Committee announced that the country is in the final stages of exiting the EU blacklist.
