EU to provide Armenia with €100,000 to recover from flood

YEREVAN, June 19. /ARKA/.  The European Union will provide €100,000 in humanitarian funding to assist Armenia in its efforts to recover from the recent flood.

This humanitarian aid aims to directly benefit 5,060 individuals in total, including 2,500 individuals who will receive cash assistance for their most immediate needs and 2,760 individuals who will receive support with gaining access to shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene. The assistance is targeting families whose homes, crop fields, livestock or food supplies were destroyed during the floods.

Additionally, the EU, through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) and the government of Spain, has deployed three experts who will assist the Armenian government in assessing the damage to infrastructure caused by the recent flood.

The team of experts met with local authorities to better understand the government's needs and priorities. Work has already started assessing damaged structures in Tashir and Alaverdi. The team focused on the infrastructure (small bridges) that gives access to agricultural land but also looked at the houses, the European Union in Armenia revealed on Tuesday.

Heavy rains flooded Armenia’s northeastern provinces Lori and Tavush on 25 and 26 May, causing the Debed, Aghstev, and Tashir rivers to overflow their banks. As a result, portions of the railway and the freeway connecting Armenia with Georgia were destroyed. The death toll stands at 4, and 443 individuals were evacuated from the flooded area. A total of 300 million drams has been allocated for recovery efforts.
