YEREVAN, May 18. /ARKA/. Prominent economist Daron Acemoglu, who is professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), should not only visit Armenia but also provide his assistance in restoring Armenia’s economy, said Ashot Markosyan, professor of Economics at Yerevan University of Architecture and Construction during a discussion organized today by the Club of Economic Journalists.

Acemoglu was born in Turkey to Armenian parents, but has moved to the United States. He used to criticize the former Armenian government for high level of corruption and ineffective economic policy.
Earlier this month Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote in Facebook that he had a phone conversation with Acemoglu inviting him to visit Armenia.

Economist Vahagn Khachatryan, in his turn, noted that Acemoglu is among the ten most prominent economists in the world and in one of his works described situations like the one in Armenia  now.

“Armenia can serve as a good example for him to implement his theory in practice, but the question is whether he will propose a solution to our problems and how much the new government will be able to use his recommendations," Khachatryan said.

However, the chairman of the board of Araratbank Ashot Osipyan believes that there is no need to invent a bicycle.

"It is necessary to create a group of local experts, and there are many good economists in Armenia whose potential should be used. This done, it will be possible to achieve success and meet the expectations of people," Osipyan said.

He said otherwise, if the expectations of the people are not justified, and since the revolution was actually made by young people, disappointment will be serious and may trigger a new exodus of young people from the country.

"We are interested in the success of the revolution. We want to have a developed country and for this purpose an integrated economic development program, a single vector should be formed so that regardless of the change of power, development is ensured," Osipyan said.

Daron Acemoglu is the recipient of the John Bates Clarke Medal (2005). He  is one of the 10 most cited economists in the world. -0-
