Armenian MPs call for holding hearing on monopolies
YEREVAN, October 24. /ARKA/. An Armenian parliament member asked his fellow MPs today to look into the problem of monopolies. According to Levon Zurabyan, the head of the opposition Armenian National Congress’s parliamentary faction,  the existing monopolies in the import of consumer goods are the biggest corruption problem.

He said the monopolies affect consumers, pensioners, socially vulnerable strata of the population, who are forced to buy staples at artificially inflated prices.

‘Smaller businesses also suffer because the market is closed to competition." - Zurabyan said.
In this regard, Zurabyan reminded of Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan’s statement that anyone can freely engage in import of goods to Armenia, and in case of problems, they should appeal directly to him.

"I think that calling  directly to the prime minister will not be so effective, so I propose that we hold  parliamentary hearings on this issue to see what must be done in the first place", - Zurabyan said.

His initiative was supported by another MP from the faction Nikol Pashinyan, who said that Ararat Tumanyan, the director of Arag company, complained the other day that he was forbidden to import 100 tons of diesel fuel.

In response to this invitation parliament speaker Galust Sahakyan noted that the hearing can be held at any time, but it requires concrete facts.

"Especially that the Prime Minister already spoke on this topic ... I think he will soon submit some proposals concerning monopolies and we should wait until they are unveiled, especially that there is a specially established commission working on this issue, - Sahakyan said.-0-
