YEREVAN, August 7. /ARKA/. The Armenian government decided at its session on Thursday to establish a procedure for licensing import of steel reinforcement to the Republic of Armenia.

As stated by Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan, this project is based on the law recently adopted by the National Assembly, according to which a basic duty of 29,000 drams was established for each ton of finished metal products imported to the republic from third countries.

“As a result of the government’s activities in recent years, investments of up to $150 million have been realized, according to various estimates. 1,000 new jobs have already been created, and an increase in the use of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal has been recorded. Before that, for decades, factory equipment, entire production lines, various types of metals, and “skeletons” of cars were exported from Armenia under the guise of scrap metal,” Papoyan noted.

According to him, then the next stage began: scrap metal was used to produce and export the resulting products. In this way, added value was obtained, numerous new jobs and new companies were created, exports were carried out and taxes were paid.

"After the government declared that it was necessary to produce finished semi-finished products, new investments were made and new jobs were created. ASCE GROUP and GTB Steel provide our entire local market, moreover, they claim to export products. As a result, from a country exporting scrap metal, we have turned into a state producing finished metal products and fully satisfying domestic demand," Papoyan said.
