YEREVAN, February 25. /ARKA/. Armenia is currently carefully exploring available technological options for small modular reactors and considering proposals submitted by international partners. This was stated by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, speaking at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
"The Armenian government has adopted a policy of maintaining nuclear energy as a key component of the country's electricity system. Although the operational life of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant has been extended until 2036, we are exploring the possibilities of a smooth and safe transition to a new nuclear power unit," Mirzoyan stated.
According to him, the selection process is based on Armenia's commitment to reliability, long-term sustainability, and the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.
About the Armenian-American Agreement
During the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance to Armenia on February 9-10, a joint document was signed concluding negotiations on an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The document forms the legal basis for further cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, specifically licensing and the possible involvement of US technologies and equipment for small modular reactors. The agreement provides for $5 billion in initial exports and up to $4 billion in fuel and maintenance.
