Armenia Approves Revised Concept for Academic City: Construction to Begin in 2027
YEREVAN, February 26. /ARKA/. The Armenian government has approved a revised concept for the development of Academic City.

"The German organization International GmbH Architects and Engineers has already developed a master plan, and the German RSUP (Rabe Strategic Urban Planning) has prepared a strategic framework for urban development," stated Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan.

She reported that the Italian company "Systematica" conducted a study on transport and mobility, and TUM International developed a technology cluster and management system.

"Ernst & Young is currently completing an analysis of the project's financial feasibility, viability, and investment opportunities. This analysis will be ready in March and will allow us to finalize the project's investment package and begin working on the investment direction through conferences and interaction with partners," the minister said.

Andreasyan also reported that work is underway in collaboration with prestigious universities to form an educational cluster and develop the content and structure of the arts cluster. Negotiations are already underway with Cambridge regarding its inclusion in the classical cluster.

According to the minister, the revised concept defines the campus's vision, cluster models, and infrastructure.

A "Talent Development Program" will also be launched, whose mission is to identify and develop the talents of each individual, expand their opportunities, and ensure prosperity in their own country.

Andreasyan stated that construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. The first phase will include dormitories for 4,250 students, a multifunctional concert hall and conference center covering over 74,000 square meters, and a technology cluster with a total area of approximately 628,000 square meters, including research and engineering infrastructure.

About Akademgorodok

The master plan concept for Akademgorodok, which is planned to house a significant portion of Armenia's universities and research institutes, is being developed by the German company International GmbH Architects and Engineers. The concept was presented in April 2024.

The main construction site for Akademgorodok is envisioned to be the 17th district on the northwestern outskirts of Yerevan. It will then extend beyond the city limits, occupying a vacant lot in the village of Sasunik in the Aragatsotn region, and to the east, toward the Ashtarak Highway. Furthermore, the site of the Armenfilm film studio will be included in Akademgorodok.

The vision for Akademgorodok is to house approximately 16 universities within its territory – up to eight public and up to eight private/international educational institutions.

According to the schedule, phased construction was planned to begin in 2025, and the first students were expected to begin classes at Akademgorodok in 2030. Approximately 44,000 teachers, scientists, and students from Armenia and abroad are expected to be housed at Akademgorodok, which is equipped with modern "green" technologies.
