A panel of environmental experts approves release of 170 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan for irrigation

A panel of environmental experts from Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences approved the release of 170 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes in 2022.
YEREVAN, May 4. /ARKA/. A panel of environmental experts from Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences approved the release of 170 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes in 2022.
According to the National Academy of Services, that amount was requested by the government. Vladimir Narimanyan, a water resource management specialist, said the demand for irrigation water this year will be higher that in previous years.
The National Academy of Sciences said also that a study of technical condition of the Arpa-Sevan tunnel found 29 damaged sections.
Lake Sevan, one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia, is located in the heart of the Armenian plateau, at an altitude of 1,914 meters. The lake stretches over 70 kilometers from northwest to southeast. Its water surface area is nearly 1,500 square kilometers.
The 48.3 km-long Arpa-Sevan hydro tunnel supplies water from Kechut reservoir to the Lake Sevan. -0-
