About 150-160 Armenia-bound trucks have been trapped at Upper Lars border crossing on Russian-Georgian border because of unfavorable weather, Armenian transport minister Manuk Vardanian said today.
YEREVAN, November 24. /ARKA/. About 150-160 Armenia-bound trucks have been trapped at Upper Lars border crossing on Russian-Georgian border because of unfavorable weather, Armenian transport minister Manuk Vardanian said today.

"Unfortunately this year winter is early and the weather conditions have deteriorated. Now work is underway to tackle this problem," he told reporters after a Cabinet session.

According to Vardanyan, Georgian authorities are showing support to trucks stuck on their side of the border. He said an arrangement was reached with Georgian authorities to establish a joint Armenian-Georgian company to address these issues.

According to Georgian Highways Department, heavy snowfalls have closed traffic between Gudauri and Lars for trailers, and buses with more than 30 seats.
Vardanyan also said his ministry has a section on its official website that provides latest information on the situation in particular sections on Georgian roads.

Upper Lars is the only land border crossing that does not go through Georgia's Russian-backed breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It serves as Armenia’s sole overland route to the former Soviet Union and Europe.  -0-
