The Armenian government should enforce stricter regulation of agricultural sector, a key condition to enhance its development and upgrade the outdated agricultural machinery, Garnik Petrosian, an agricultural expert, said today.

YEREVAN, November 3. / ARKA /. The Armenian government should enforce stricter regulation of agricultural sector, a key condition to enhance its development and upgrade the outdated agricultural machinery, Garnik Petrosian, an agricultural expert, said today.

"In particular, to secure agriculture development the government should help create new wholesale markets,’ he said.

According to him, the authorities should also initiate establishment of new fairs of agricultural products, where the trade occurs directly between farmers and city dwellers. He then urged the government to pay greater attention to the import of agricultural machinery.

Another expert in the field of management, Harutyun Mesrobyan, said a lot of fertile land is not used due to being privately owned. As a result, farmers who can not expand their land plots suffer and the townspeople are forced to buy food at inflated prices. According to him, one of the main problems of the domestic agricultural sector is that the import volume is several times greater than exports.

In 2010, Armenia’s agricultural sector saw an unprecedented decline of 12.5%. In 2011, the agricultural sector has been declared a priority and a set of projects were launched to increase productivity and profitability of the sphere.

According to the National Statistical Service, the volume of agricultural products produced in Armenia in September 2011 in current prices amounted to about 169 billion drams, having increased by 18.6% in comparison with September 2010. -0-
