YEREVAN, May 11. /ARKA/. Armenia's government has approved today the release of 170 million cubic meters of water from the largest Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes in 2023. This amount of water is set by a law.

The water will be used for irrigation of 31,300 hectares of land, according to the government. Also, some 172 million cubic meters of irrigation water will be pumped out from the Hrazdan River, 45 million cubic meters from the Azat Reservoir and about 5 million cubic meters from the Aparan Reservoir.

Lake Sevan is the main source of fresh water in the region and one of the biggest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia, situated in the heart of Armenian highland, at the height of 1914 m. The lake stretches over 70 km from north-west to south-east and its surface area is almost 1,500 sq km.

Twenty-eight rivers flow into it and one –the Hrazdan River- flows out. By 2030, the level of the lake is to be raised to 1,903.5 m. --0-
