YEREVAN, February 3. /ARKA/. Russia's second-largest food retailer Magnit said on Monday it was suspending fruit and vegetable imports from China due to the spread of the coronavirus and logistical complications.
The company said it began importing these goods from other countries - Morocco, Israel, Turkey, and also increased purchases of Russian vegetables, completely replacing Chinese imports.
It said changes in procurement and logistics will not have a noticeable effect on the cost of fruits and vegetables on the shelf, according to RBC, which quoted a retailer's statement.
According to Magnit, in 2019, Chinese tomatoes, peppers, tangerines, grapes and some other fruits accounted for about 0.9% of the network’s turnover.
On February 1, Russian food watchdog Rospotrebnadzor ordered provincial administrations “to ensure an enhanced disinfection regime” at catering establishments and grocery stores. -0-
