Armenian expert names sectors, which can secure double-digit growth

The agriculture is one of the sectors, which has the potential to serve as a locomotive of the Armenian economic growth, according to Gagik Makaryan, the head of the National Union of Employers.

The agriculture is one of the sectors, which has the potential to serve as a locomotive of the Armenian economic growth, according to Gagik Makaryan, the head of the National Union of Employers. Speaking at a news conference today he said it is one of the sectors that may help ensure double-digit growth in the coming years.
In his words, investors, including from the Gulf countries are showing growing interest in creation of greenhouses and intensive gardens in Armenia and some of these investment programs are already in the process. He said local entrepreneurs are also active in this regard.
He said investments in agriculture would significantly expand local production, as well as increase exports and develop the processing industry.
The second potential sector is tourism, which can create a huge multiplier effect at the expense of improving the quality of services and development of infrastructures, he said. There are also the ICT industry and engineering, which can also give a push to economic development. In terms of exports they already compete with the mining industry.
Makaryan noted that the government’s support for investments in the development of the textile industry and assembling enterprises will create many new jobs and significantly reduce the level of poverty. To this end, he said, it would be necessary to envisage appropriate privileges and tax benefits for investors.
