Armenia and Russia to discuss mutual recognition of driver’s licenses
YEREVAN, August 16. /ARKA/. Armenian and Russian officials will meet soon to discuss mutual recognition of driver's licenses, the Eurasian Economic Commission, the executive body of the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), said today, adding that a corresponding decision was made during the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on August 14 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

On June 1 Russia enacted a law that bans foreign nationals with driving licenses issued by their home countries, from working as drivers in Russia.  The law does not apply to citizens of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Belarus, the three other member states of EEU, since the Russian language has the official legal status in these countries.

The Russian language does have such a status in Armenia. This means that thousands of Armenian labor migrants in Russia are not able to work as drivers of trucks, taxis and other vehicles. Otherwise they will be fined 10,000 Russian rubles and their employers 50,000 rubles.

This controversial decision was reportedly objected by Armenian prime minister during the Astana meeting. As a result Armenia and Russia agreed to meet before August 20 to discuss the issue of mutual recognition of national or international driving permits issued in two countries. -0-
